Taxonomic History / Nomenclature
Buckanastrepha Fischer, 1977: 883, 908. Type species: Opius bucki da Costa Lima, 1938 (original designation).

Type locality of type species: Porto Allegre, Rio Grande do Sur, Brazil; type in Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, Rio de Janeiro.

Originally described as subgenus of Bracanastrepha Fischer (1977)); placed in Opius s.l. (i.e. as a synonym of Opius) by Wharton (1988).

Diagnosis and Relationships
Buckanastrepha was characterized by Fischer, 1977 on the basis of the complete absence of an occipital carina, exposed labrum (Figs 2, 3), long second submarginal cell (Figs 1, 13), absence of a mesoscutal midpit (Figs 7, 8), and presence of a sculptured precoxal sulcus (Fig. 9). The type species of Buckanastrepha is distinctive, with a very flat clypeus and head somewhat triangular in lateral view (strongly narrowed ventrally: Fig. 5), propodeum with reticulate sculpture (Fig. 11), and fore wing m-cu postfurcal (Figs 1, 13).

The specimen figured here is a paratype of Opius bucki from the U.S. National Museum.
