Frekius Fischer, 1972: 69-70, 78 Type species: Opius castaneus Granger, 1949 (original designation)

Type locality of type species: Madagascar, Ankaratra; holotype female in Museum National d’Historie Naturelle, Paris.

First described as a subgenus of Opius (Fischer 1971, 1972). Transferred by Wharton (2006) to Utetes, but retained as a subgenus of Utetes.

The name Frekius was first used by Fischer (1971: 389) in a key to subgenera of his section A of Opius. However, the name did not become available until 1972 (Fischer 1972) when a type species was designated.

Diagnosis and Relationships
The type species of Frekius is a member of the genus Utetes, with typical tibial carina; mesoscutum with large midpit (Fig. 3); typical T1 (Fig. 5: carinae well developed but no dorsope); typical wing venation (Figs 1, 4, 6) with fore wing stigma relatively stout, m-cu postfurcal, and RS+M arising relatively posteriorad on 1M; mandible without basal tooth or lobe ventrally; and a deep pronope (transverse, elliptical lips-like pit) of this genus. It is exceptional in that the labrum is almost completely concealed (Fig. 2). There’s no T2 striae and the propodeum is completely granular.
