Parasteres Fischer, 1967: 3. Type species: Biosteres (Parasteres) acidusae Fischer, 1967 (original designation).

Type locality of type species: Puerto Rico; holotype male in U. S. National Museum.

Originally proposed by Fischer (1967) as a subgenus of Biosteres and later (Fischer 1971: 33) elevated to generic rank. Treated by Wharton (1987) as a synonym of Diachasmimorpha.

The holotype of the type species is a recovery from a biological control program where Diachasmimorpha tryoni was released on Puerto Rico against tephritid pests. The type species is a junior subjective synonym of Diachasmimorpha tryoni (Wharton and Marsh 1978).

Parasteres was originally characterized primarily on the basis of loss or extreme reduction of the occipital carina. Wharton (1987, 1997) presented evidence that the type species of Diachasmimorpha and Parasteres belong to the same species group, and treated Parasteres as a strict synonym of Diachasmimorpha. Yu et al. (2012), however, continue to treat Parasteres as valid, possibly following van Achterberg (1999) who kept Parasteres as a subgenus of Diachasmimorpha based on characters in a key that unfortunately do not separate the type species of these two nominal genera.

Biology / Hosts
The type species was described from a single specimen reared from Anastrepha obliqua infesting Spondias mombin fruits.
