Adontopius Fischer, 1984 : 93-94. Type species: Opius (Opiothorax) adentatus Fischer, 1980 (monobasic and original designation).

Type locality of type species: Tyrol, Austria; holotype female in Munich.

Originally described as a subgenus of Opius (Fischer 1984), subsequently treated as a synonym of Phaedrotoma by Li et al. (2013).

Diagnosis and Relationships
This subgenus was created by Fischer (1984) in order to segregate further the species that Fischer originally placed in Opiothorax. Opiothorax was restricted to contain those species with a basal lobe or tooth on the mandible while those species that lacked the tooth were placed in Adontopius (Fischer 1984 ). Fischer specifically included only one species in Adontopius in his original description, but suggested that there were likely others and compared the type species to a species that he had tentatively placed in Thoracosema. Other species were eventually added to Adontopius (e.g. Fischer 1999). Fischer (1996) later described Millenopius, which he placed near Adontopius, separating the two on the basis of body sculpture: Adontopius lacked the lateral keels on the scutellum that characterized Millenopius and Millenopius lacked dorsal carinae on the first metasomal segment (T1) whereas these carinae were present at least basally in Adontopius. Otherwise, Adontopius shares the following features with Opiothorax and Millenopius: absence of precoxal sulcus and mesoscutal midpit; labrum exposed; second and following metasomal terga without sculpture; fore wing 3RSa less than twice as long as 2RS; hind femur not unusually thickened; and mesosoma less than twice longer than high.
